Middletown:
Monmouth County's 3rd Largest Town
Middletown is one enormous town. From the waterfront on the Bayshore, to the parkland of Lincroft and Navesink, and all the jug handles and strip malls Routes 35 and 36 have to offer in between, driving is one serious business in this 41.1 square mile township, Monmouth's Counties third biggest.
Middletown has a rich history, and was one of the very first settlements in New Jersey. Because of its large size and central location, Middletown has evolved into an extremely diverse community, with a balance of residential, commercial and industrial uses. Navesink River Road, running high above the Navesink River is one of the most visually stunning roads in the county. Middletown is also home of Brookdale, Monmouth County's Community College.
You could spend an entire day tooling through Middletown, traveling from Sandy Hook Bay to the Navesink River, up and down the commercialized highways of routes 35 and 36, and in and out of picturesque side roads. The Brookdale campus, off Newman Springs Road, makes a fine stop on a drive through the township. Established in 1967 on the site of a former horse farm, Brookdale's campus has wooded, park-like sections and gently rolling hills. The college's new student life center, built to resemble a barn, makes the most of the pastoral setting.
Middletown also is known for its many colonial landmarks. Founded in 1664 by Dutch settlers, Middletown also was home to an early African-American village near Red Hill Road. In 1852, Clinton P. Heath, a former slave from North Carolina, founded Clinton Chapel A.M.E. Zion Church on Red Hill Road. Earlier landmarks include Old First Church at 69 Kings Highway. Built in 1668, this is the oldest Baptist church in the state, and the 10th oldest in the nation. Down the road at 92 Kings Highway is Christ Church, an Episcopal parish founded in 1702. A highlight of Poricy Park, one of Middletown's many green spots, is the Murray Farmhouse, which dates to 1770. The park also includes a wildlife preserve. Local children know Poricy Park as a good place to search for fossils.
Middletown has two public high schools, North and South, and is home to two Catholic high schools, Mater Dei and Christian Brothers Academy.
