A beautiful blend of history and suburban life

Driving through Manalapan you can see farmers' fields are tucked in between the burgeoning strip malls, box stores and banks that have sprouted up as the area has swelled with residents seeking a bit of the country good life for themselves and their families. Turn off Route 9 and onto Tennent Road, where large suburban homes exist side by side with farms.

The agricultural and historical heritage of the area is everywhere in Manalapan and Englishtown -- from Rick's Saddle Shop, a tack store, along the colonial Main Street of downtown Englishtown, to the Englishtown Auction in Manalapan, which began as a cattle market in 1929 and is now 40 acres of vendors plying everything from garage sale items to shoes to clothing to jewelry.

Gravestones dating to before the Revolutionary War mark the resting places of some of the township's first residents in the Old Tennent Presbyterian Church and Cemetery in Manalapan. The Village Inn, where Gen. Washington reportedly signed the court martial papers for Gen. Charles Lee because of his conduct during the Battle of Monmouth in 1778, still stands in the heart of Englishtown, at the intersection of Water and Main streets.

But the marks of modern life are also etching themselves on the landscape: Large Mansions have grown on farmers' fields. Every morning, hundreds of commuters catch buses to Manhattan at the park-and-ride at Route 9 and Gordon's Corner Road. They come home at night to live in this wonderful suburban town.
