Fair Haven:
Real Home Town Living
It is the sense of community, the physical beauty and the location that keep so many in Fair Haven. It is these attributes that first attracted early residents of the sister communities that, because they are on a peninsula, are somewhat isolated. Fair Haven has always had its own tight knit, eclectic, community.
The borough started in the early 1900s as a commercial village of clammers, fishermen and others who worked along the river. Yet the village had its own share of river estates, including that of Henry C. Miner, who is considered to be one of the fathers of vaudeville. His presence drew vaudevillian performers in the summers of the late 1800s, and they established the Fair Haven Actors Colony. The vaudevillians liked Fair Haven because it was a community free of social restraints. The performers felt at ease and accepted.
The community is predominately residential with a variety of commercial activities on River Road featuring a quaint group of shops at its eastern end. The majority of homes were developed in the 50's and 60's; however, numerous older estates are situated along the Navesink.
